LARKANA, June 16: A team consisting of the district police officer, Larkana; the president, Larkana Chamber of Commerce and Industry; and members of the District Public Safety Commission on Monday visited the women’s jail where the prisoners complained about their late production in the courts due to the non-availability of a women police squad.

The DPO, Sultan Khwaja, assured the prisoners that the police squad would be provided and asked to be regular. He asked the jail supervisor to inform him whenever she received any production notices.

The prisoners also complained about the shortage of medicines and non-availability of cold water during the summer.

The DPO promised that arrangements would be made for providing educational and recreational facilities for their children.

He said that a teacher would soon be posted there and free textbooks provided to the children.

The jail supervisor demanded that additional police staff be provided in the jail.

He urged the NGOs and philanthropists to come forward and assist the prisoners.

Some women prisoners wanted to know whether legal help could be provided to them.

The team members assured that a lawyers’ panel would be constituted in consultation with the president of the District Bar Association, Larkana, Ayaz Soomro, so that free legal assistance could be provided to the women in jail. The jail supervisor too was informed about this.

Some prisoners hailing from Karachi, Jacobabad and Kandhkot sought legal help regarding their cases.

Advocate Kalpana Devi assured the prisoners that she would plead their cases if she was provided the papers regarding their cases.

The DPO said that the demand of certain prisoners regarding being shifted to a women’s jail near their district would be considered and taken up with the officials concerned.

Advocate Kalpana Devi, a member of the Public Safety Commission, donated two portable water coolers. Aslam Shaikh, president, Larkana Chamber of Commerce and Industry, donated a colour television, four ceiling fans and an electric water cooler for the women’s jail.
