HYDERABAD, June 16: The growers of Zaunr Shakh, Bukerani sub-division, Chambar area, Tando Allahyar taluka, held a demonstration outside the press club here on Monday to protest against acute water shortage in the waterway.

Speaking at a rally, the leaders of the protesters, Maqbool Ahmed Sarewal and Ghulam Qadir Leghari, demanded that “artificial” shortage of water in Zaunr Shakh should be eliminated and the land lying at tail-end of the water channel should be provided their due share of water.

They also demanded the removal of the irrigation SDO, Bukerani sub-division, who, according to them, was selling water to the influential landlords.

They said that it was repeatedly being announced through print and electronic media that water rotation programme had ended but for all practical purposes, it was still continuing in their area.

They said that enough water was available in canals but the corrupt irrigation officials were not releasing water to their waterway.

They raised slogan against the irrigation department.

Speaking on the occasion, Mohammad Khan, Ghulam Haider Samo and others said that not a drop of water was available in the tail-end of Fazal Shakh as a result their crops were being destroyed.

They said that their families were starving but the officials of Agriculture Development Bank were after them for recovery of the the loans and threatening them with arrests and auction of their lands.

They appealed to the Sindh chief minister to direct the irrigation department to release water into Fazal Shakh, declare the area calamity-affected area and exempt the growers from payment of agricultural loans.

LABOUR PARTY: Activists of the Labour Party Pakistan(LPP) observed a token hunger strike outside the local press club on Monday in support of peasants of Okara.

Talking to journalists, local LPP leaders Ahmed Ali Shaikh, Tanveer Kalhoro and others said that the hunger strike was aimed at extending moral support to the tenants of Okara and demanded that they should be given proprietary rights of the lands.

ADVISER: The adviser to the Sindh chief minister for health, Noman Saigal, paid a surprise visit to the Civil Hospital Thatta on Saturday night and inspected the surgical ward, women ward and the ultrasound department.

He also visited the medical store and made inquiries from the patients and their attendants about the behaviour of doctors and availability of medicines.

The people complained about unhygienic conditions, non-availability of medicines at the medical store and the indifferent attitude of the doctors.

On hearing this, Mr Noman was annoyed. He directed the director general, Health Services Sindh, Hyderabad, Dr Qadir Bux Memon, to hold an inquiry into the complaints and submit a detailed report to him immediately.

A large number of people gathered in the premises of the hospital and complained against the ill-mannered behaviour of a surgeon.
