NEW DELHI, June 13: The US ambassador to New Delhi said on Friday that terrorism was continuing to come from Pakistan and the United States was determined to put a stop to attacks on India.

“The terrorism emanating from Pakistan has not ended. The entire administration from the president down is determined to do everything we can to end terrorism against India,” ambassador Robert Blackwill told reporters.

He was speaking after being asked if US President George W. Bush would pressure Pakistan’s President Pervez Musharraf to prevent cross-border movement of militants into Indian Kashmir when the latter visits Washington later this month.

“We’ll see what he (Bush) says, but this is on the president’s mind,” Blackwill said.

Blackwill said Washington would like the neighbours to move “as rapidly as they can” towards a rapprochement, but added that it was not up to the United States to set the pace.

Meanwhile, he said if India decides to send its troops to Iraq they would not be used in combat operations and would not work under the US flag.

“Not combat and certainly not under the US flag. If Indian troops were deployed they would do so under the Indian flag,” Blackwill said.—Reuters/AFP
