Army rendered 'unmatched' sacrifices against terrorism: COAS

ISLAMABAD: Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on Friday made a farewell visit to the tribal areas of Pakistan and said that Pakistan's armed forces had rendered unparalleled sacrifices in the fight against terror, DawnNews reported quoting a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

The army chief reviewed the progress of the construction of the central trade corridor in North and South Waziristan tribal regions.

Gen Kayani also lauded the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) over the completion of construction work of 500 kilometres of road within a short span of time. The construction of the 714-long corridor in being carried out by the FWO.

Directing the FWO to maintain quality standards, the COAS said that the rest of the road construction should also be completed on time.

Moreover, he paid tribute to the soldiers and officers who had rendered sacrifices and added that the army's struggle against terrorism was unprecedented.

Gen Kayani is set to retire on Nov 28 after leading the army for six years. His successor has not been named yet.

The government has said it will announce the next army chief and chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff committee on the day Gen Kayani retires.

Chief of General Staff Lt Gen Rashad Mehmood and Chief of Logistic Staff Lt Gen Haroon Aslam are frontrunners for the two slots. A change of command ceremony has been planned for Nov 29.
