HYDERABAD, June 2: The vice chancellor, University of Sindh, Mazharul Haq Siddiqui, has stressed the need for changing the curriculum of many disciplines in consultation with the teachers.

He was speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural session of a 6-day training course for zoology teachers of various colleges and universities here on Monday.

The course has been organized by the University of Sindh in collaboration with the Higher Education Commission, Islamabad.

The vice chancellor exhorted the senior scholars of the university to produce more research scholars in various disciplines so that they could play their due role in the development of the country.

He said that the training of the teachers was aimed at imparting the latest skills and updating their knowledge, and added that it is the duty of the teachers to transfer the acquired knowledge to the students.

Referring to the recent speech of the chairman, the Higher Education Commission, Islamabad, Dr Atta-ur-Rehman, that the universities of Pakistan were producing less number of PhDs, the vice chancellor called upon the senior scholars of different disciplines to guide young scholars to go for MPhil and PhD degrees.

He said that there is also an essential need for result-oriented research industries for enhancing their production and marketing.

He appreciated efforts undertaken by the Higher Education Commission for training of teachers of colleges and universities.

Mr Siddiqui also appreciated the efforts of the zoology department of the university, and on behalf of the Higher Education Commission and the university, he assured all facilities to the scholars.

The representative of the Higher Education Commission, Shafiullah Khan, said that besides other commitments, a major function of the Higher Education Commission is to review and revise curricula of all disciplines taught at the graduate and postgraduate levels in the universities and degree colleges of the country and to impart training to the teachers in the subjects so revised.

He said that keeping in view the importance of teachers’ training, the Higher Education Commission is every year organizing various in-service and pre-service trainings for the university as well as college teachers.

He said that in the current year, the Higher Education Commission, has organized and is going to organize 12 English language teaching courses, each of a six-day duration, and added that in this year the Higher Education Commission has conducted maximum number of in-service training courses at the University of Sindh including training courses for English, physics and botany teachers.

He appreciated the cooperation extended by the University of Sindh for the conducting of the training courses for the teachers of colleges and universities.
