KARACHI, June 1: Jockey M. Barani and his trainer uncle Manzoor Baran, were in the racing limelight on Sunday, when they combined to register a fine double at the Summer Gymkhana Race Meeting at the Karachi Race Course.

The duo got their first winner in the fifth race, when Ali Faisal Farooq’s four-year-old chestnut filly Burning Sky sprinted to victory over the five furlong, ending the pretensions of Roberto Carlo Fan. Bull Dancer looking impressive was third, followed home Khan Baba.

Nawab also in this race, an easy winner last week under jockey Arshad was never interested in the proceedings, finishing among the also ran, going over the same distance and with the same rider in the saddle.

Quite surprisingly the Stewards never called up the rider nor the connections to inquire about the in and out running of Nawab.

Not satisfied with their earlier victory, Barani and Mansoor registered their fine double, when Strike The Gold had a pillar to post triumph, chased all the way over the five furlong sprint by Guarantee, Wing Commander and Mickey Mikado II.

As predicted in these columns, Mrs. Yasmin K. Khan’s bay horse Dauntless never let the racing fans down, sprinting home ahead Super Boy with M. Nasir in the saddle. Once a leading horse owner, Mrs. Yasmin was all smiles with this victory.

The second race on the afternoon’s programme was won by Baby Tabassum piloted by Asghar Ali, flying in from behind to collar front runners Rukhsar and Royal Beauty.

Syed Ali Gohar Shah’s bay horse Dr. Dre ridden by M. Yousuf and trained by Karim Agha, never gave the connections any anxious moments, beating Yaqoob Choice and Your Pleasure after little Sunny led the field for most part of the race.

Canon Again splendidly ridden by M. Mazhar, picked up the spoils in the fourth race, beating the more fancied Ustadon Ka Ustad and Ceaser’s Palace with Sonia finishing in the frame.

A big upset was in store in the sixth event, where Sapno Ki Rani registered her second triumph in a row under jockey Shehad, after Shah Khan on song for his fifth consecutive win, ran a miserable race to finish a disappointing fourth.

Sapno Ki Rani’s task for victory was made all the more easier when Golden Voice, the new favourite installed in race under jockey Arshad finished among the also ran and was seen limping slightly when returning back into the unsaddling enclose after the race.

The next racing programme is scheduled for Sunday, June 8.
