NEW DELHI, May 31: Celebrated Indian film musician Anil Biswas, whose compositions propped up vintage Bollywood films, died on Saturday aged 89, a family member said.

He is credited with introducing orchestra music to cinema in India, which produces more films each year than any other country.

Anil Biswas, who had fought for India’s independence from British rule, was born in a small village in what was then the province of East Bengal, now Bangladesh.

He first worked in Bengali theatre in Kolkata before moving to Mumbai in 1934 and quickly rising to fame in the Hindi film industry.

He also introduced famous singers Mukesh and Talat Mehmood to the world of cinema.

He is survived by two sons and a daughter. —AFP
