GUJRANWALA, May 30: All Pakistan Stainless Steel Re-rolling Association has expressed concern over smuggling of Indian steel and slump in the local market.
The association officials resented this at a meeting presided over by President Muhammad Shafiq Khokhar here on Friday.
They said Indian steel was injurious to health, as its utensil caused cancer. The Lahore High Court had already banned the import of Indian steel here, they added.
However, some traders smuggled the steel with the connivance of customs officials, they alleged. They said Indian steel was available at comparatively cheap prices, and the manufacturers and traders had been supplying its utensils to the market. Consequently, the local industry had been closed for the last one month.
Alleging that some industrialists had destroyed the local industry for their benefit, they demanded President Pervez Musharraf to save the national stainless steel industry.
STABBED TO DEATH: A man stabbed to death his neighbour on Friday over a dispute of pigeons in Qila Dedar Singh.
The deceased set up a cage for pigeons on the roof of his house where he remained present for most of the time. His neighbour Muhammad Javed had forbidden him time and again not to stand on the roof, but he refused to do so. He fell into a rage and stabbed him to death with a sharp-edged knife. He died on the spot.
DEATH SENTENCE: The sessions court on Friday awarded death sentence and Rs150,000 fine to two brothers involved in a narcotics case.
The court also handed down 10-year imprisonment each to convicts Muhammad Ashraf and Riasat Ali for their involvement in another offence.
According to the prosecution, Gakkhar police arrested the two brothers on Oct 13, 1999, with 50 kilograms of charas and 15 kilograms of heroine on the GT Road. —Correspondent
