KARACHI, May 30: The Decentralized Elementary Education Project (DEEP) would provide jobs to around 7000 people and benefit 210,000 students annually in Sindh.

The employment under DEEP includes 147 project staff, 5600 teaching staff and 1200 non-teaching staff, officials say.

The total outlay of the DEEP is Rs5,880 million, of which Rs4538.124 million are being provided by the Asian Development Bank and the rest will be provided by the Sindh government.

The project aims to improve elementary education with emphasis on girls’ education in rural areas and urban slums in the province.

The targets set under the project include: up-gradation of 1200 primary schools (65% for girls) to elementary schools; establishment of 204 English medium schools in each Taluka; five-room buildings for 100 shelterless schools through public-private partnership; and, introduction of pre-primary education in 1000 primary schools.—PPI
