LARKANA, May 29: A group of members of the District Public Safety Commission (DPSC), Larkana, on Thursday visited the special prison for women and found that it did not provide any medicines to the prisoners.

The team was led by its chairman, Dr Niaz Chandio.

At present, 23 women from different districts are being kept in the jail, which had been established in 1987.

The prisoners complained to the members of the DPSC that they were always produced late in courts as the police force from the district concerned never came on time.

They complained about the shortage of drinking water inside the barracks where they were locked at 5pm.

They complained that no lady doctor was posted in the jail and only a lady doctor, Kanita Kishore, from a local NGO visited them once a week.

Dr Kanita Kishore said that medicines were needed badly as the jail was lacking in medicines, and added that even medicines in everyday use were not available.

She wondered how the urgent demand for medicines for two pregnant women in the jail could be met.

She said that skin diseases were common in the jail, and added that it was followed by ulcer and tension. She elucidated that the prisoners refuse to take common medicines as they consider them to be ineffective.

A policeman posted there said that a woman police constable on being asked provided drinking water to the prisoners.

The jail superintendent, M. Sultana Syed, said that philanthropists should come forward in providing medicines for prisoners. She said that most of the women prisoners who were in jail had been accused of trafficking in narcotics.

PML(Q): Syed Pir Shah, the central joint secretary of the PML(Q), accused the opposition for creating a mess in the assemblies.

Talking to newsmen here on Thursday, he advised the opposition to be serious and instead of blocking proceedings of assemblies, it should provide them positive support for their smooth functioning.

He brushed aside that any rift had developed within the PML(Q), Sindh chapter.

He asserted that Ghaus Bakhsh Mahar was still the provincial president of the PML(Q).

Flaying previous governments for not delivering goods to the people, he claimed that the government was fully committed to addressing people’s issues.

He claimed the PPP was fast losing its popularity, while the PML(Q) was gaining ground.

He said that he had been nominated as additional general secretary of the PML(Q), Sindh, to assist Captain Haleem Siddiqui.
