KHAIRPUR, May 29: The Sindh minister for irrigation, Syed Sadaruddin Shah, has said that the Sindh government’s stance on the greater Thal canal was clear and the federal government had been informed about the feelings of the people of Sindh regarding the Thal canal.

Speaking to a gathering of growers in the Bachal Bahanbhro village on Thursday, he said that the federal government had been informed about the Sindh government’s stand on the Kalabagh dam as well, and added that there was no question of compromising on sharing Sindh’s water.

He said that 20 machines were working round the clock to drain out water from the lands submerged due to the breach in the Rohri Canal.

He said that he had personally monitored the on-going work on the Rohri canal, and added that a survey was going on to assess the loss to the people affected.

He said that the breach was the result of the carelessness of the SDO, Irrigation, and other officials concerned, and added that action would be taken against them.

POLIO: The district Nazim, Khairpur, Nafisa Shah, has said that eradication of polio from the district is the first priority of the district government and all resources would be tapped up for the purpose.

She was addressing a meeting of the polio eradication committee in her office on Thursday.

She said that the EDO (health) has been directed to coordinate with the elected representatives, and added that she has also instructed Taluka Nazims to cooperate with polio eradication teams.

She said that Taluka Nazims should remain present in their Talukas during the anti-polio campaign.

She asked all the other departments to provide vehicles to the health department during the anti-polio campaign.

Representatives of the WHO lauded steps taken by the EDO, health, Khairpur, to eradicate polio and disclosed that two cases of polio were reported in the district. However, it added that if the campaign continued, polio would be completely eradicated.

The EDO, health, Karim Bux Bhatti, apprised the meeting that in the last polio campaign around 96 per cent children upto the age of five were administered polio vaccines, and that the next phase of the anti-polio drive would be launched from June 3 to June 5.

The meeting was attended by health department officials, Taluka Nazims of the district and a UNICEF representative.
