KARACHI, May 25: The provincial Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs, Chaudhary Iftikhar Ahmad, has said that government is endeavouring to ensure restoration and protection to the rights of common man but the citizens will also have to extend a helping hand in the government’s nation-building efforts to realize this cherished goal.

The minister was speaking at a seminar on ‘Law Awareness’ held here on Saturday night under the auspices of the Legal Aid Committee of All Pakistan Memon Federation in connection with the APMF’s Golden Jubilee celebrations.

Chaudhary Iftikhar observed that an overwhelming majority of citizens lacked awareness on prevailing laws and their rights due to which they confront with serious problems in their routine lives.

He pointed out that owing to the lack of consciousness, there was a tendency of evading taxes as people appeared reluctant to file their returns. This attitude, he said, lead them to face legal action, including imposition of fines and penalties.

The minister also referred to general reluctance in giving an evidence in a court of law and attributed this problem to the prevailing police investigation system.—PPI
