GUJRANWALA, May 21: Five people were killed while 20 others grievously injured in a collision between a coaster and a bus near Kamoke on Wednesday night.
The coaster going to Rawalpindi from Lahore slammed into the oncoming bus in consequence of which five people, including three women, died instantly while 20 others received serious injuries. They were admitted to the local DHQ Hospital. Some of the injured were shifted to the Mayo Hospital, Lahore, for their critical condition. The identity of the dead could not be established till the filing of this report.
SHOT DEAD: An elderly man was shot dead while his wife and two sons were injured by bandits on resistance during an abortive dacoity bid in Rashid Colony here on Wednesday.
Three armed outlaws barged into the house of Haji Noor Muhammad, held up the family members and started collecting cash and valuables. For putting up resistance, the outlaws fired on them, killing Noor instantly and injuring Inayat Bibi, Tariq and Tahir. Later, the area people caught two fleeing bandits and handed them over to police.
SURPRISE VISIT: Punjab Excise and Taxation director general Obaid Rabbani paid a surprise visit to the district excise and taxation office here on Wednesday.
He checked the recovery record of the property tax and expressed his dismay over the slow pace of recovery at a meeting.
Issuing show-cause notices to various excise and taxation officers and filed staff, he directed them to ensure complete recovery of property tax till June 30.
Excise and Taxation director Muhammad Sarfraz and other senior officers were also present on the occasion.
Meanwhile, the excise and taxation officers got issued the arrest warrants for defaulters who would be arrested if they failed to clear their dues.
APPROVAL: The City Tehsil Council has given an approval for the construction of a commercial plaza in the old municipal building with an expenditure of Rs152 million.
At a meeting held here on Wednesday, City Nazim Babu Javed Ahmad said the commercial plaza would be of five-storey. The building would also have a restaurant, a mosque and the car parking facility, he said. The City Nazim expressed the hope that the commercial plaza would help increase the income of the city tehsil council.
SUSPENDED: An inspector was suspended while an SI demoted by the Range DIG on different charges here on Wednesday.
The judicial guard incharge inspector, Ghulam Ahmad, failed to ensure the security of the accused in the judicial lock-up while SI Ghulam Abbas of Wazirabad was demoted on the charge of violating police rules.
