PESHAWAR: Col. Abdul Ghafur Khan Hoti, MNA and Deputy Leader of the Muslim League Assembly Party in the National Assembly, said today (May 20) he had given notice of a Bill seeking to institute Friday as a weekly holiday instead of Sunday.

He said Sunday holiday was associated with the Christian religion and Pakistan, as an Islamic State, must observe Friday as a weekly holiday.

Similarly, he said, Red Cross Society, which too has its association with Christianity, should be renamed as Red Crescent.

Col Abdul Ghafur Khan said that similar organisations were known as Red Crescent in Turkey and Red Lion in Iran. He said he proposed to move a Bill to this effect during the forthcoming session of the National Assembly at Rawalpindi.—Agencies

K.M.C. starts water disconnection KARACHI: The tax-payers of Karachi are facing harassment again — this time at the hands of Karachi Municipal Corporation which has launched a drive to recover various taxes under the threat of water disconnection. Water supply to about 100 premises has been disconnected while the recovery of arrears of different taxes during the past 20 days totals over Rs18,29,000.

The KMC drive is a sequel to a notice served by the Karachi Development Authority to stop supply of water in case the KMC did not clear the arrears totalling over Rs2 crores.

The campaign which started early this month, KMC sources said yesterday, will continue till the end of next month.

Three groups of workers are busy carrying out water disconnection operations in various parts of Karachi.

The KMC is disconnecting water supply not only for arrears of water tax, but also for arrears of property tax, general tax, conservancy tax and fire brigade tax.—Staff Correspondent
