KARACHI, Dec 11: The hopes of residents of Altaf Town were revived on Tuesday when the commander of the PAF base Korangi Creek and the director- general of the Karachi Development Authority visited the sewage-flooded settlement.

The locality has been suffering from a number of civic problems topped by the one due to sewage. So far no civic agency has been willing to take over the locality, whose land is owned by the KDA and allotted to people uprooted from the interior of Sindh about 10 years ago.

The KDA DG, Brig Abdul Haq, reportedly, showed Base Commander Khalid Cheema the main sewer being used by the residents to Bhitai Colony, administered by the Korangi Creek Cantonment Board headed by the base commander. Residents of Sector A of Bhitai Colony allegedly use the sewer blocking the flow from Altaf Town, which causes sewage flooding in the locality.

Sources said the retired brigadier asked the base commander to streamline the sewerage system of the colony, in turn easing the locality’s problem. The base commander, reportedly, agreed to the proposal, and said he would soon take steps to address the problem.

Residents said the visit of the two top officials showed that something would be done about Altaf Town’s problems “sooner or later.”
