KARACHI: The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) yesterday unanimously adopted a Code of Press Ethics drafted by a committee headed by Mr Altaf Husain, Editor, “Dawn”.

The Code comes into effect immediately as all members present at the meeting ascribed their signatures on the document.

For the implementation of the Press Code of Ethics, a “Press Court of Honour” shall be set up comprising a retired High Court Judge as Chairman and six members of the CPNE.

The Council also appointed a committee to negotiate with the Central and Provincial Governments regarding Government–Press relations.

The five-man committee consists of Mr Altaf Husain, Editor, “Dawn” (Chairman); Mr S.M. Mobin, Editor, “Unity” (Chittagong); Mr Nasim Hijazi, Editor, “Kohistan”; Mir Khalilur Rehman, Editor, “Jang”; and Mr M.A. Zuberi, Editor, “Evening Star” (members). The meeting adopted a resolution, protesting against the practice of compelling journalists to secure clearance from the Information Ministry for going abroad.

The resolution, moved by Mr Ajmal Hussain, Editor, “Illustrated Weekly of Pakistan”, and seconded by Mr Majid Nizami, Editor, “Nawa-i-Waqt”, urged the Government to withdraw the restrictions imposed on the freedom of movement of journalists.— Agencies
