IN a city like Peshawar, which has congested roads and is frequently attacked by terrorists, I find it  surprising to see the flippant way of the Peshawar city traffic police treating the matter of illegal or non-registered cars plying the roads with trifling gaiety.

Even with the implementation of digitilised number plates in Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa more than a decade ago, we still find old types of number plates on many cars, mostly taxis, plying the roads.

I believe that with such a dangerous security situation in Peshawar and with the news of only 0.50 per cent of the population paying taxes, driving one’s car on Peshawar roads should be a privilege. And the Peshawar city traffic police should take action against all the cars that still have not digitilised their car registration and paid their taxes. These people should not be allowed to use roads and only those cars that have digital number plates should be allowed on roads. This would help reduce the traffic congestion in Peshawar, improve tax collection and also enforce better security in the city.
