MIRPURKHAS, May 14: The sugarcane growers have warned that if tens of millions of rupees which remain outstanding against 27 sugar mills of Sindh were not paid to them forthwith they would surround the mills in protest.
The growers decided this at a meeting held at the Kachelo farm under the aegis of the Sugarcane Growers Association (SGA), Mirpurkhas, which was presided by its president, Faisal Kachelo, on Wednesday.
The speakers lamented that the growers were facing financial hardships but the mill managements were not ready to clear their arrears. The growers said that they had been compelled to seek loans.
They said that the mill managements were violating government directives.
They regretted that the growers were being detained by the Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) and other banks.
They called for an end to the issuance of arrest warrants against the growers.
The meeting was attended by MNAs Syed Qurban Ali Shah, Pir Aftab Hussain Shah Jilani and Nawab Yousuf Talpur, and several landlords.
TEACHERS: A black day was observed by the teachers of high schools of the district on the call of the Government Secondary Teachers Association (GSTA) on Tuesday to protest against the non-payment of their training allowance under the middle school project.
The teachers wore black arm-bands and hoisted black flags at school buildings.
They condemned the delay in the payment of their allowance and demanded that the chief secretary and secretary, education, ensure immediate payment to 300 teachers.
BOY KILLED: A woman, Kesran Kolhi, 33, doused herself and her two-year-old son, Prakash, with kerosene and then set herself as well as her son on fire in the Mureed Khaskheli village, Samaro Taluka, on Monday night. Her son died on the spot whereas the woman herself sustained 80 per cent burn injuries.
She was taken to the Civil Hospital where her condition was stated to be critical.
