Kerry calls PM, assures cooperation with new govt

ISLAMABAD: US Secretary of State John Kerry on Monday called Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif assuring him of America’s continued cooperation with Pakistan and with the new government in the country.

Kerry congratulated the prime minister on taking the office and the two discussed matters of regional significance.

Kerry praised Pakistan's role in efforts to establish peace in the region, whereas Prime Minister Sharif laid emphasis on strengthening the strategic dialogue between the two countries.

Sharif of the Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N) was elected the country’s 18th prime minister on June 5.

Sharif returned to power after surviving a military coup, a seven-year exile to Saudi Arabia and a government dismissal. His party secured majority in the May 11 elections making him the only leader to assume power for the third time.

Will the PM please remind Secretary of State John Kerry of his promise to bring Raymond Davis the American CIA official responsible for the killing of two Pakistani's before American courts and try him under US law. This was a publicly made commitment by Mr Kerry when he used his influence to free the American from Judicial custody in Pakistan.

It is nice (and conventional) of John Kerry to congratulate Nawaz Sharif of assuming power, but now it is up to Nawaz to prove that he deserves congratulation. He was congratulated twice before, and so was Zardari and others.

Don't trust the Amercians. Their interests is only strategic and because Pakistan is a nuclear power. If they really cared for Pakistan and its people then would stop DRONE attacks for our sake unless we ask them hlep.

As the USA are dribbling for their geo-interests that are most of the time incompatible with those of Pakistan and the region, this country along with its neighbours have to act to defend theirs.

The PM needs to tell US Administration in no uncertain terms that it must restraint its Senators & Congressmen/Congresswomen from meddling in Balochistan which is an integral part of Pakistan. It must refrain from interfering and encouraging the locals to revolt against the legitimate Federal Government of Pakistan.

I hope Nawaz Sharif starts on the right foot! We are a sovereign country and should be treated like one. I hope our Prime Minister doesn't get bought out like our previous leaders and always keeps the interests of our citizens first and foremost. I don't think Pakistan should be intimidated by these foreign powers, as we have seen over the last few years, that it is mostly talk and no action. And if they dare to take any action, they end up paying for it - just look at Iraq and Afghanistan. Looking at how conscious they are with Syria and Iran, I think we can draw the conclusion.
