PESHAWAR, June 5: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf-led ruling coalition in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Wednesday submitted a resolution to the provincial assembly’s secretariat against the US drone strikes in tribal areas.

The resolution was handed over to Speaker Asad Qaisar by senior minister in the provincial cabinet Sirajul Haq, of Jamaat-i-Islami, senior minister Sikandar Khan Sherpao, of Qaumi Watan Party, MPA Shaukat Ali Yousafzai of PTI and MPA Shahram Khan Tarakai of Awami Jamhoori Ittehad Pakistan at his chamber.

The draft resolution said: “The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly strongly condemns the US drone strikes and considers these attacks against the country’s security and sovereignty as well as violation of violation of international law.”

It further said violence and acts of terrorism had increased in the country in general and in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in particular due to the US drone strikes, while the province had suffered a lot economically.

“This assembly recommends to the federal government to adopt all measures to cease the drone strikes immediately and in this regard announce its policy as soon as possible,” the resolution said.

After submitting the resolution to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Secretariat, Mr Haq, Mr Sikandar, Mr Shaukat and Mr Shahram told reporters that partners of the ruling coalition in the province would never compromise national security and sovereignty.They said it was the federal government’s responsibility to halt such attacks and the provincial government would fully support it in this respect.

PTI and JI have long been publicly opposing US drone strikes in tribal areas.

According to the reports, the US Central Intelligence Agency has carried out over 300 drone strikes in Pakistan’s tribal agencies since 2004, killing several high-profile militants, including commanders of Al-Qaeda and Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan militant outfits.
