LAHORE, May 25: A petition was filed in the Lahore High Court on Saturday for the constitution of a judicial commission to probe into the reasons behind power crisis in the country and to fix responsibility on the authorities.

Judicial Activism Panel’s chairman Advocate Azhar Siddique filed the petition and alleged that the ongoing power crisis was artificial and a few people were taking such steps to serve their personal interests.

He said former Wapda chairman in an interview on May 23, 2013, said that no progressive work had been done during the span of previous governments while the upcoming government could resolve electricity crisis/shortfall within 100 days.

The petitioner said that when Wapda was used to supply electricity in the country, all was going well and the production and supply of electricity was not as short as it was now.

He said the production and supply of the electricity had been reduced with the establishment of Discos in place of Wapda.

He alleged that prima facie not only the politicians but ineligible and corrupt bureaucracy played its role in the power crisis faced by the country.

Advocate Siddique sought directions for a judicial inquiry to fix the responsibility so that the persons found responsible could be brought to justice.

He said all the concerned authorities, officers, departments and institutions responsible for such power outages were liable to be dealt with iron hands and legal proceedings against them should be ordered.
