KARACHI: Tension gripped parts of North Nazimabad here on Saturday after a senior activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) was killed in an armed attack, police said.

They said armed men on a motorbike opened fire on 47-year-old Amir Farooqi when he was standing outside his home in Block A, North Nazimabad. He suffered two bullet wounds and died on the spot.

“The victim was a member of the MQM’s sector committee,” said an officer of the North Nazimabad police station.

“The attackers sped away after gunning down Mr Farooqi.

His body was handed over to his family after completion of medico-legal formalities at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.”

After the incident tension gripped the locality and other blocks of North Nazimabad as traders pulled down shutters and vehicles started disappearing from the roads.
