RAWALPINDI, May 9: The woman, shot and injured by a man who later committed suicide in Tarnol on Thursday, died at Pims in the early hours of Friday, hospital and police authorities said.

Her body has been handed over to her parents.

Mumtaz Ahmed, 26, resided near Dr Shaukat’s homeo clinic in Tarnol where Tasneem Akhtar, 22, worked. He had been trying to convince Tasneem to marry him. He had even sent a proposal to her parents, but it was turned down.

On Thursday, Mumtaz came to the clinic and shot Tasneem thrice. He then wrote a suicide note after which he committed suicide with the same weapon, the police said.

Inspector Mohammad Hussain Lasi, who is leading the investigation into the incident, said when the police arrived at the scene, the man (Mumtaz) was breathing his last while the girl was lying in a pool of blood.

Mumtaz, who suffered three bullet injuries from close range, was pronounced dead by the doctors while the girl was said to be in critical condition.

In her statement, she said Mumtaz had been asking her to marry him, but she refused. She also alleged that Mumtaz had been teasing her, about which she had complained to her parents, the investigating officer said.

Quoting the suicide note left by Mumtaz, the investigating officer said he apologized to his brothers and sisters for what he was going to do.
