Kasuri slams Sinha

NEW DELHI, May 7: Foreign Minister Khursheed Mehmood Kasuri accused his Indian counterpart Yashwant Sinha on Wednesday of apparently seeking subversion of Pakistan’s quest for reviving its membership of the Commonwealth.

In an interview to India’s NDTV channel, Mr Kasuri also said some news reports were unfair when they described Prime Minister Zafarullah Khan Jamali’s peace proposals of Tuesday as “completely inadequate”.

Mr Kasuri said he had found a recent report in the Hindustan Times about Mr Sinha’s alleged bid to torpedo Pakistan’s quest at the Commonwealth as negative.

An Indian foreign ministry spokesman however sought to play down Mr Kasuri’s claim as being based on news reports. He said the Indian government did not subscribe to any personal agendas. Mr Sinha declined to comment on Mr Kasuri’s comments, saying he would not want to complicate the peace moves.

Several newspapers quoted unidentified Indian official sources as describing Mr Jamali’s overtures as “completely inadequate”.

“The list of confidence-building measures announced by the prime minister of Pakistan is far larger than what was announced by the Indian premier,” Mr Kasuri said.
