GUJRANWALA, May 7: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal and activists of Jamaat Ahle Sunnat have expressed their resentment for showing porno movies by cinemas and yelling obscenities by stage actors.

They asked the district administration and police authorities to seal such cinemas and halls besides arresting their owners.

This demand was made at a meeting held here on Wednesday which was presided over by MMA MPA Qazi Hamidullah.

MMA MPA Ghulam Farid Hazarvi and other speakers said although DPO Saud Aziz and city Nazim Babu Javed got arrested around two dozen artistes a few days ago, but such action proved ineffective when they were released on bail.

Meanwhile, activists of Shabab Milli, an organ of the Jamaat-i-Islami, threatened that they would launch a campaign against obscenity if the authorities concerned did not seal cinemas and halls involved in spreading obscenity.

ARRESTED: The district police claimed to have arrested 577 proclaimed offenders and 108 members of 25 gangs of dacoits and robbers during the month of April.

DPO Saud Aziz said here on Wednesday that police also seized a huge quantity of illicit arms and looted goods from their possession during a special drive launched against the criminals.

He said police recovered 19 Kalashnikovs, 97 rifles, 99 guns, 150 revolvers, 574 pistols, 32 carbines and 7,000 cartridges besides looted goods worth Rs21.1 million from their possession. He said the raiding teams also seized 30kg hashish, three kilogramme heroin and 1,933 bottle of liquor.

The DPO said the police arrested 365 court fugitives during the period.

RECOVERED: A landlord, who was kidnapped by some armed men for ransom, was recovered on Wednesday by the Wazirabad police from Chenab Bela.

Armed men had kidnapped Riaz in Dargahiwala village and took him to Chenab Bela. Later, they demanded Rs500,000 as ransom for his release. A police party raided there and recovered him from the clutches of criminals, but they all managed to escape.
