KARACHI: Renowned educationist Professor Azfar Rizvi, who was gunned down by unknown attackers in Karachi's Kareemabad on Friday night, was buried today at Yaseenabad graveyard, his family members informed.

According to his youngest son, Captain Sibtain Rizivi, his father left his office around 9:30 pm along with his grandson who turned 3 last night. He left work early in order to prepare for his grandson's birthday. "He called us up to inform us that the preparations have been done," Sibtain added.

However, just as Rizvi's car came towards Kareemabad Block 1, two motorcycles with four armed men, sped close to his car. Within a minute, they opened fire, that killed Rizvi and his driver, Ghaffar. The grandson is safe and sound according to the police.

His body was with the Edhi foundation till the time of his burial at Yaseenabad graveyard today at 4pm.

The killing of an educationist drew strong reactions from all quarters, with a demand to arrest the culprits.

The police claimed that Rizvi was killed because of his sect, however, his son strongly refuted the claim, adding that his father just had a "Shia-sounding name."

Rizvi was the CEO of Dhaka Coaching Center and also served as honorary secretary of Anjuman Taraqqi-i-Urdu Pakistan (ATUP) as well as, chief patron of Pakistan Association of Press photographers.

Deputy Commissioner Karachi Central Dr Saifur Rehman has confirmed the incident saying unidentified motorcyclists opened fire at Rizvi’s car in Karimabad area killing him and the driver.

Taking notice of the incident, Governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan has ordered a probe report from the IG Sindh Police within next 24 hours.

Pakistan Association of Press photographers, Private Schools Association, Majlis Wahdatul Muslimeen (MWM), Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain among others have strongly condemned the brutal killing of the educationist.

Private Schools Association has announced to observe a day of mourning tomorrow on Saturday.

Motive behind the targeted killing is yet to be ascertained.
