KARACHI: The entire population of Korangi, about 1,50,000 people, yesterday remained out of their 25,000 quarters as a protest against the ejectment notices served on most of them by the Karachi Development Authority.

Black flags fluttered on house-tops while the residents wore black armbands.

The squatters returned to their quarters last evening, in accordance with the decision of the Action Committee. The committee after discussing the situation had asked the people to go back to their quarters after observing ‘Black Day’.

The Action Committee meeting decided that the entire Korangi Colony will observe hunger-strike in case ejectment was resumed by the KDA.

The residents of Landhi and some other colonies who have also been served with ejectment notices, also quit their houses yesterday as a mark of protest.

The Commissioner of Karachi, Mr Afzal Agha, who is Chairman, KDA Governing Body, visited Korangi yesterday morning. He “assured the residents that no further ejectment will be made unless and until the matter was decided by the KDA Governing Body”. —Staff Correspondent

Revolt aborted ANKARA: The Turkish Cabinet today (May 21) imposed martial law in Ankara, Izmir and Istanbul for one month following the abortive revolt staged during the night by Ankara military cadets.

Earlier today, Government forces crushed the armed revolt and arrested the rebel leader after bombing the area around his headquarters — a military cadet academy.

The leader of the midnight rebellion was ex-Colonel Talat Aydemir, who headed an abortive coup in February last year.—Agencies
