LAHORE: Some individuals of the cricket fraternity have contacted the International Cricket Council (ICC), asking the game’s governing body to confirm whether the new constitution of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is democratic and acceptable to it.

Sources said that various former and current officials of the different regions of the PCB have various objections to the new constitution, which was made in a bid to fulfil a demand of the ICC, asking all member countries to adopt a democratic constitution deadline for which ends in June. The sources said that these stakeholders also plan to move the court regarding the new PCB constitution as it does not reflect the true spirit of a democratic set-up.

“Actually, we are waiting for reply from the ICC and will only take a decision whether to take the case before the court after getting reply from the ICC,” said one of the former regional heads.

According to the new PCB constitution, the president of Pakistan, who is the patron-in-chief of the PCB, forms a nomination committee which will suggest names for the post of new PCB chairman. Then ten out of 15 members of the governing board will elect a new PCB chairman.

But the ICC follows the constitution of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) whereby general body is the basic unit which elects new office-bearers as well as makes constitutional amendment.

Therefore, the procedure for electing the PCB chairman described in the new constitution clashes with the ICC constitution.

It may be mentioned that the PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf has reportedly claimed that the new constitution is made by the ICC itself and sent directly to the patron (President Asif Ali Zardari) and he had no role in it.

However, if this was the situation, the individuals contacting the ICC would have directly moved the court instead of awaiting ICC reply.
