QUETTA: Syed Matiullah Agha was elected Speaker Balochistan Assembly on Monday, DawnNews reported.

He was administered the oath by acting speaker Dr Fauzia Marri who was later elected as the assembly's deputy speaker.

Both Agha and Marri were elected uncontested for the positions.

Today's session of the Balochistan Assembly began under the chairmanship of Dr Marri during which Agha had submitted his nomination papers for the position of assembly speaker.

Earlier on Sunday, parliamentary parties in the Balochistan coalition government had agreed to elect Agha as the new speaker of the provincial assembly.

Sources told Dawn on Sunday that a meeting of the coalition partners was held with Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raisani in the chair which decided to unanimously nominate and elect Agha for the post of speaker that fell vacant after speaker Nawab Aslam Bhootani was voted out through a no-confidence motion on Dec 26.
