Usually well-informed sources told Dawn that ever since anger has been expressed against rush of arms to India, Western diplomats, particularly Americans, have started a whispering campaign in both wings encouraging separation. To West Pakistanis they say that if the East Wing separated, the entire Western aid being given to Pakistan would be utilised in the West Wing, bringing greater prosperity to this wing.
To the East Pakistanis they say that the West Wing consumed the major portion of the aid and if the East Wing became independent the aid quota will be fixed separately for the two wings. This way these diplomats have tried to exploit the sentiments of a section of the people of the two wings.
These American diplomats are in Rawalpindi since the day the National Assembly opened its session. Included among them are men of US Consulates at Karachi, Lahore and Dacca. They remain busy carrying on propaganda among the Assembly members till late hours of the night. The Assembly members feel disgusted by these “uninvited guests at odd hours”.
It is learnt that the Pakistan Government would investigate the affair and, if need be, take suitable action against diplomats found guilty of creating hatred and disaffection between the people of the two wings. —Staff Correspondent
