ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday confirmed Pakistan's ratification of visa agreement between Pakistan and India, signed between the two countries on September 8, 2012 during a visit of the Indian foreign minister to Pakistan.

The federal cabinet had accorded its approval to sign this agreement during its meeting held on September 5, 2012 and approved the ratification of the subject protocol on October 31, 2012.

Spokesperson to the president Senator Farhatullah Babar said that objective of the visa agreement was to facilitate the travelers of both the countries.

He said that under this agreement, besides diplomatic, non-diplomatic and official visas, a visitor visa will be issued for visiting relatives and friends or for any other legitimate purpose.

This visa will be valid for a maximum of five specified places and shall be for a period not exceeding six months.

We want visas like US gives Multiple for five or ten years. We have to move on from old ways. The mindset has to change. People applying for visa should not be treated as criminals. One huge problem is reporting. Of late the reporting in Karachi has become most painful as repeatedly reported.

One small positive step. But I hope and pray, for the time to come that there will be no visa requirements for traveling between India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Why just for five specified places? Why not for whole country with a probable exception of cities which have genuine sensitive military installations or military industrial complex? Let people mingle. Best way to get to know each other and eviscerate the mistrust.
