Autumn in Muskoka

Published October 26, 2012

Located approximately two hours north of Toronto, Muskoka, Canada is a scenic district of some 1600 lakes, waterfalls and sheer granite cliffs covered with forests of pine and cedar, maple and birch, with leaves that turn crimson and gold in the Autumn.

Muskoka extends from Georgian Bay in the west, to the northern tip of Lake Couchiching in the south, to the western border of Algonquin Provincial Park in the east.

The local economy is based, predominantly, on tourism, reflecting the area’s scenic setting. Visitors and residents alike have been drawn to Muskoka for more than 100 years, attracted by Muskoka’s natural year-round beauty.

This region sees over 2.1 million visitors annually. National Geographic Traveler magazine has chosen Muskoka as one “Best of The World - Must-see places for 2012." Last summer, Muskoka was number one pick on their Ten Best Trips of Summer 2011.

Muskoka is a scenic area sprinkled with picturesque villages and towns, farming communities, lakeside vacation hotels, resorts near to golf courses, country clubs, and marinas. Several thriving urban centres provide excellent shopping, dining, recreation and entertainment services year-round.

The name of the municipality derives from a First Nations chief of the 1850s. The Ojibwa leader associated with the area was Mesqua Uqie, for whom the land was probably named. The District Municipality of Muskoka includes the towns of Gravenhurst, Bracebridge and Huntsville and the townships of Georgian Bay, Lake of Bays and Muskoka Lakes. Each offers unique experiences making it a popular resort destination. - Text & Photos by Mohsin Abbas
