Plight of fishermen

Published September 16, 2012

WE all know the pitiable life of the fishermen of Pakistan and India. They provide us seafood, which also earns foreign exchange by its export.

They earn livelihood for their families after hard work which is hazardous.

Since they are mostly uneducated and do not possess navigation instruments, they often stray into another country’s waters and are promptly arrested and put into jail for months.

I fail to understand the logic behind arresting them when it is very much clear that whatever happened was the result of sheer miscalculation.

The fishermen should be told by coast guards about the mistake they have made, and after appropriate survey/questioning they should be directed to go back.

The governments of the two countries should arrange training of the fishermen about territorial sea borders and instruct them to refrain from violations.
