ISLAMABAD, Sept 3: The investigators of Rs1.7millioin fraud case gave a clean chit to religious scholar Dr Tayaba Bukhari and revealed that a couple used her name in a criminal activity, sources in the police told Dawn.

Earlier, Squadron Leader (retired) Javed Iqbal lodged a complaint with Woman Police Station stating that his wife Aqsa Javed, also a retired officer of armed forces, paid Rs1.7millioin through 16 online transactions from Standard Charter bank F-11 to Dr Tayaba Bukhari. The transactions were made for the treatment of Ms Javed’s mother by spiritual healing.

However, the patient did not get any relief and in response the couple demanded their money back, but she refused.

During investigation it was revealed that a woman – Abida Iqbal – while using the name of Professor Dr Tayaba Bukhari defrauded the couple to mint Rs1.7million from them.

Prof Bukhari has nothing to do with the case and is innocent, besides, Abida Iqbal and Imtiaz Kausar were the culprits of the case; the sources quoted the investigation report.

The investigation officer Sub-Inspector Mohamamd Aslam Sahi in the report revealed that the holders of the two accounts in which the amount was transferred were Imtiaz Kausar and Abida Iqbal, not Prof Bukhari.

The investigators also raided the residence of Ms Iqbal in Lahore to arrest her, but her father Mohammad Iqbal told police that his daughter eloped with a man – Mehoob.

The investigation revealed that Abida Iqbal and Imtiaz Kausar misused the name of Prof Bukhari in advertisement, in newspapers and internet to defraud people and mint money, the sources said.
