A RECENT announcement by Wapda said that 100,000 MW can be generated through hydropower, which is most inexpensive of all types of power generating technologies but has been deliberately overlooked owing to vested interests.

The per unit electricity cost in case of public sector hydropower is reduced just to Rs1.60 provided the hydel potential is exploited instead of relying on the most expensive thermal power.

Wapda expects that in 2025 the country’s hydel generation may peak up to 60 per cent of the entire power generation.

On the basis of this rationale Wapda expects from the government to plan a policy of using hydel and renewable energy to make power affordable.

The government should take up necessary measures in this regard.
