HYDERABAD, June 19: Residents of Bachao Bund area of Latifabad demonstrated here on Tuesday against housing schemes of the Green Kohistan and Al-Rehman City.

They said the no objection certificate had been given by the Hyderabad Development Authority (HDA) and other departments for launching the schemes beyond the embankment of the River Indus.

The protest was led by Abdul Sattar Brohi of Hyderabad Development Organisation. He said the housing schemes had been launched inside the river protective embankment in Latifabad.

He said the builders had been allowed to use riverine area land for the housing schemes. He added that the land had been hit by flood in the past and declared part of the calamity-hit area.

He added that 15,000 people, who would live in the housing area, might face threat to their lives in the event of floods.

He said his organisation had filed applications to the HDA but no institution had taken them up which indicates that not only the HDA but irrigation department and other officials working in the offices of commissioner and provincial ombudsman were party to it.

A case, he warned, would be filed in the Sindh High Court if NOCs issued to builders were not cancelled.
