ISLAMABAD: A sports spectacle organised by the British High Commission was held in Islamabad to mark the 100-day countdown to the London Olympics.

On the occasion, the Pakistan Olympic hockey team played an exhibition match against former Olympians which was won by the former 4-3.

The Pakistan hockey team was led onto the field by Zainab Imran, the 14-year-old Karachi schoolgirl selected to be an Olympic torch-bearer.

Zainab will be among those carrying the Olympic flame during its 70-day journey around the UK this summer.

Also, hundreds of Pakistani school children involved in the British Council’s International Inspiration programme took part in an Olympic-themed performance besides special appearance of the country’s top athletes and guests.

Working in hundreds of schools in Pakistan, the International Inspiration programme run by the British Council is creating opportunities for more than 12 million people in 20 countries around the world.

Moreover, Pakistani Paralympians also took part in two 100m races. The races in Pakistan were among 100 races being held in 100 countries to mark the 100-day countdown to the London Olympics.

Paralympian Haider Ali won the first race while Paralympian Mudassir Baig won the second one.

Speaking on the occasion, British High Commissioner to Pakistan Adam Thomson said: “One hundred days from now, the eyes of the world will turn to Britain for the London 2012 Games.

“Today’s spectacle of sport was a fantastic demonstration of the excitement that the London Games will bring to Pakistan,” the high commissioner remarked.
