KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah on Wednesday announced three-day mourning and a public holiday on Jan 12 (today) in the province on the demise of Pir Pagara, chief of the Pakistan Muslim League Functional and the spiritual leader of the Hur Jamaat.

All offices, health and educational institutions working under the Sindh government will remain closed on Thursday, which is the second public holiday this week as earlier Monday was declared a public holiday on account of the Urs of Shah Abdul Lateef Bhitai.

While most universities, colleges and schools in the province postponed their exams on account of the public holiday, a Karachi University spokesperson said that all papers of the ongoing BA (regular and private) and BCom (regular) annual examinations scheduled for the day would be held as per their timetable.

However, a lecture to be delivered at the Karachi University Area Study Centre for Europe by a scholar from Italy on Thursday has been postponed. The university announced that it would take place on Jan 13 at 10.30am.

The Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK), Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) and Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (Fuuast) postponed their respective exams scheduled for Thursday on account of the public holiday.

BIEK According to BIEK controller of examinations Mohammad Imran Chishti, all the postponed papers of the ongoing higher secondary school certificate (supplementary) exams would be conducted on Jan 23. The exam timings and centres would, however, remain unchanged, he added.

DUHS Pro-Vice Chancellor of the Dow University of Health Sciences Prof Umar Farooq announced that the university would remain closed on Thursday and all the examinations, which were planned for the day, would now be held on Friday (Jan 13).

Fuuast Academic activities at the Gulshan and Maulvi Abdul Haq campuses of the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology would remain suspended on Thursday, said Fuasst registrar Prof Qamarul Haq. He added that all exams scheduled for the day had been postponed.
