The modern day charpoy

Published November 17, 2011

The charpoy, derived from the word ‘char paya’ in Persian meaning four footed, is a portable bed used all over Pakistan.

The charpoy is a necessity for many people as it is compact, light-weight and affordable. They are used by travelers and labour workers who cannot afford the luxuries of beds and sofa sets.

Many people with small living spaces prefer this bed as it can be folded and kept aside when not in use.

Most teashops along the highways and railway stations in Pakistan, offer truck drivers and travelers charpoys for rent during their stopovers.

Traditionally, charpoys were made out of wood with the frame carved with designs and knotted date tree leaves with jute ropes acting as the sleeping area. Today, however, nylon ropes have proven to be cheaper and equally strong compared to jute ropes and are used more commonly.

Over the years, more attention is being paid to the designs of the woven bed as oppose to its functionality. Enriched with rich textures and vibrant colours, charpoys are now more aesthetically pleasing. - Video by Shameen Khan/Dawn.com
