KARACHI: Mehboob Khan, father of banned player Waqar Mehboob, said he will fight against the six-month ban imposed on his son by the Pakistan Squash Federation (PSF).
PSF banned three top national players Aamir Atlas Khan, Yasir Butt and Waqar Mehboob for underperforming in the World Squash Team Championship held in Germany in August.
“This is not fair and I will do anything in my capacity to overturn the ban imposed on my son,” Mehboob told PPI.
Mehboob said that the federation took a very imprudent decision against young players and it would send a very wrong message to all players.
“My son is a very young player and imposing a ban on him, without any proper reason, would prove very demoralizing for him,” said Mehboob, who also coaches his son.
Mehboob’s other two sons Farhan Mehboob and Waqas Mehboob are also among top squash players of the country, especially Farhan, who is Pakista’s No 2.
Mehboob categorically denied that his son underperformed in the event and said that Waqar gave his best.
“I don’t know what others did in Germany but I am sure that my son didn’t intentionally underperform.
“There was no coach with him in Germany and there was no proper camp before the tournament, therefore keeping an eye on all these facts, one can easily ascertain that the players couldn’t put up their best performance in such circumstances,” he said.
