Two shot dead KOHAT, April 18: Two people were killed and a woman was injured in two different firing incidents in the outskirts of the city on Monday.

In the first incident, a man, Umar Fayyaz, who was offering morning prayers in a mosque in Murtaza Khel area of Sheikhan village, was shot dead by his uncle Mohammad Hayat and cousins. The accused managed to escape after the incident.

In the second incident, a man identified as Mausam Shah was gunned down by his rivals Kareem Khan and his accomplices over a land dispute in Kareem Khel area of Sheikhan.—Correspondent

Foreign goods seized SWABI, April 18: The Chota Lahor police on Monday arrested six people for smuggling foreign-made goods to Punjab from Peshawar.

Police said they stopped a bus on Peshawar-Islamabad Motorway and recovered foreign goods including cigarettes from it.

They said the smugglers were using the Peshawar-Islamabad Motorway to smuggle goods from the industrial areas in Peshawar to Punjab and Islamabad. The police also impounded the bus (LES-3938). The smugglers hailed from Peshawar.

Meanwhile, a 13-year-old boy hailing from Mohmand tribal region was killed after he fell from a speeding pick-up van at Khunda Mor on Monday. Police said the body of Saifullah was handed over to his relatives in Kadi area.—Correspondent

Message of peace PESHAWAR, April 18: The ANP has called upon its workers to convey the peace message of Bacha Khan to the masses during the party’s membership campaign in Fata and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

A meeting of the ANP’s provincial election commission was held on Monday chaired by Baz Mohammad Khan, according to a press release. Other members of the commission, including Hussain Shah Yousafzai, Tajuddin Khan, Imran Afridi and Musarat Shafi, also attended the meeting.

The meeting was informed that stationery and membership forms had been dispatched to all districts and tribal agencies. The party’s local chapters had been instructed by the provincial leadership to inform the people about the teachings of Khan Abdul Wali Khan and his relentless struggle for freedom of people and promotion of democratic values.—Bureau Report

English language course PESHAWAR, April 18: Certificates were distributed on Monday among 100 students from seminaries in Peshawar who are participating in a special English language course launched by the US.

A statement issued by the US diplomatic mission in Islamabad said the students from religious seminaries in Peshawar would participate in 400 hours of classes over a period of two years under the US-funded English Access Micro-scholarship Programme. Overall, over 5,000 seminary students from across Pakistan would benefit from the initiative. Language Officer from the US diplomatic mission in Islamabad, Micah Risher, distributed certificates among the students in a ceremony held here.

The chairperson of the Peace, Education, and Development Foundation Ms. Sameena Imtiaz, as well as teachers and seminary caretakers were also present. Mr Risher congratulated the students for taking part in the initiative to study English.—Bureau Report

Smuggling bid foiled BUNER, April 18: The police on Monday foiled an attempt to smuggle 400 tins of edible oil, given by the WFP for school going children, and arrested four persons besides impounding the pick-up van used in the bid.

SHO police station Daggar Mohammad Irshad Khan said the action was taken on a tip-off in a village in Daggar where an alleged smuggler was loading 400 tins of food oil meant for children to improve enrollment in schools in backward areas.

The police said the pick-up (Dir-5275) along with oil was seized, adding Gul Rawan, Riaz Mohammad, Jan Mohammad of Chinglai village and Islam Bahadur of Daggar village were arrested. He stated involvement of influential figures behind the bid could not be ruled out.—Correspondent

Zakat funds distributed LAKKI MARWAT, April 18: The district zakat committee has distributed over Rs450,000 among deserving people through local zakat committees in the Lakki town. This was stated by a local leader of ANP here on Monday.

Talking to reporters the ANP district vice president Humayun Khan Marwat said a comprehensive plan had been chalked out for transparent distribution of zakat funds. He said all out efforts were being made to provide the poor and destitute with their due rights.

He said financial assistance programmes were aimed to raise the living standard of deprived segments of society.

Meanwhile, police arrested a group of gamblers in Mughal Manjiwala village on Monday. An official said a police party of Lakki police station raided a gambling den in the locality and arrested ten persons.—Correspondent

JI membership drive LAKKI MARWAT, April 18: The district chapter of Jamaat-i-Islami on Monday set up a camp at Kargil chowk near the main bus stand in connection with its membership drive. A large number of people visited the camp and filled the membership forms.

The JI's district secretary general Sabz Ali Khan Naveed said the membership campaign was aimed to bring a peaceful revolution in the country. “The only solution to get rid of problems like dearness, corruption, joblessness and terrorism is to replace the present rulers with honest and pious people,” he said.

He said the Jamaat would persuade people to play their role in steering the country out of crises by actively participating in the membership drive. Other party leaders including district information secretary Mohammad Jibran Sanan, Malik Latifullah Khan, Mohammad Aazam Khan, Ghulam Mohiuddin, Hussain Ahmad and Abdul Ghaffar Faryadi were also present in the camp.—Correspondent

105 outlaws held PESHAWAR, April 18: The city police claimed on Monday to have arrested 105 outlaws including eight proclaimed offenders and recovered caches of weapons and drugs from them.

According to a press release the city police started crackdown in various part of the city and arrested 105 criminals including eight POs.

The arrested POs were identified as Arshad Ali, Tahseen Ullah, Zai-ul-Islam, Mukhtyar, Said Amin, Asad Iqbal, Shah Mindad and Zulfaqar Ali.

The police also recovered two hand grenades, 25 packets of explosive material, 48 pistols, 81 rifles, five Kalashnikovs and hundreds of cartridges besides 200 grams of hashish, 400 grams heroin and 10 bottles of liquor.—APP
