Normality returns to college
RAWALPINDI, Oct 5: Normality returned to the Government Degree College for Women, Dhoke Kala Khan, after its controversial principal did not come to the office on Tuesday, it has been learnt. Though some students chanted slogans against the principal, Mumtaz Liaquat, their teachers calmed them down by saying that she would not visit the college to disturb the academic activities, said an official of the education department.
Classes were conducted normally and the college administrant was supervised by the vice-principal, said Director Colleges Dr Mohammad Ashraf. The principal was transferred after the staff complained that she always misbehaved with them on petty issues.
The teaching staff and students protested against the principal after the latter returned to the college after taking a stay order from the high court against her transfer.—Our Reporter
Sentenced to death RAWALPINDI, Oct 5: An additional district and sessions judge here on Tuesday sentenced a man to death for killing a man whom his sister wanted to marry.
Judge Sajjad Hussain Sindhar convicted Tahir Butt for killing Asif Mir. The court also imposed Rs200,000 fine on the convict. If he failed to pay the fine, he will serve six more years in prison.
On September 10, 2008, Tahir shot Asif dead in the area of Pirwadhai police as he opposed marriage of his sister with Asif. Meanwhile, officials of Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) arrested a sub inspector of Sadaar Barooni police receiving Rs15,000 in bribe. Mohammad Pervaiz, a resident of Misrial Road, told the ACE that SI Mohammad Bashir had been demanding money to dispose of a criminal case against him despite the fact he made a compromise with his opponents.
Special Judicial Magistrate Nazarat Hussain Shah along with Asif Iqbal Bhatti, ACE inspector, arrested the officer outside the police station where he received marked currency notes. —Our Reporter
Encroachers fined Rs4,000
RAWALPINDI, Oct 5: Rawal Town Municipal Administration (RTMA) anti-encroachment team on Tuesday imposed Rs4,000 fines on four shopkeepers and seized 25 handcarts in its campaign against encroachers.
According to a press release, the RTMA team visited Raja Bazaar, Gunjmandi, Milat Colony, Sadiqabad, Jamia Masjid Road and Satellite Town Commercial Market and seized the goods of shopkeepers displayed on footpaths.—A Reporter
Concert at Lok Virsa today
ISLAMABAD, Oct 5: Lok Virsa will hold a live concert with renowned classical singers Ustad Fateh Ali Khan and Ustad Hameed Ali Khan here on October 6 (Wednesday).
Under its on-going popular musical series of programme titled as “documentation of genealogical musical families of Pakistan”, the classical singers belonging to the legendary Gwalior Gharana will perform during the show.
Talking to APP, Lok Virsa Executive Director Khalid Javaid said that the institute had launched a musical series with a view to encouraging youngsters in the families of reputed musicians to continue to practice the art they inherited from their elders.
SI suspended
RAWALPINDI, Oct 5: The City Police Officer (CPO) suspended the in-charge of Gulzar-i-Quaid police post and transferred the entire staff to police lines on Tuesday for failing to check crimes. sub-inspector Hamad was suspended while two other SIs, one head constable and ten constables were ordered to report to the police lines immediately.
The CPO Wisal Fakhar Sultan while talking to media men at Rawalpindi Press Club said that there had been considerable increase from 18 per cent to 35 per cent in the police performance and recovery of the stolen goods since he had assumed the charge.—Staff Reporter
