Nearly 2m sugar bags seized in Dera

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Aug 19 More than 1.87 million bags of sugar were recovered and three sugar mills were sealed during a raid by district officials here on Wednesday.

Assistant coordination officer Hameedullah Shah and district food controller Mehboob Baloch, accompanied by a police party, raided three sugar mills and recovered 750,000 bags from the Chashma Sugar Mills-I, 1,089,000 bags from the Chashma Sugar Mills-II and 34,000 bags from the Meran Sugar Mills.

The sugar mills were sealed and the bags were seized. Police personnel were deployed at the mills.

KOHAT Sixteen wholesale dealers of sugar were fined here on Wednesday.

Food department officials, along with the district coordination officer and district police officer, raided several godowns of the dealers. The raiding party detained the dealers and released them after they paid Rs30,000 as fine.

Later, speaking at a meeting, DCO Siraj Ahmed said special magistrates were being appointed to check prices of vegetables and other food items on daily basis during Ramazan.

Consumers, meanwhile, expressed their dissatisfaction over the actions being taken by the government against hoarders, demanding their imprisonment and imposition of huge fines on them.

They said that by collecting small amounts as fine from the hoarders would not discourage their illegal business.

The district administration, they claimed, on Wednesday fined each dealer between Rs500 and Rs1,000 which they could earn by selling one bag of sugar in the black market.

MARDAN During the divisional commissioner's surprise visit to various bazaars, 28 shopkeepers were held for allegedly overcharging customers here on Wednesday.

The commissioner took action on public complaints that some shopkeepers particularly bakers and sweets shops were overcharging people. The official visited main markets and bazaars on the Bank Road, Bicket Gunj, Khwaja Gung, Khasar market and other areas.

On the occasion, Commissioner Khalid Umarzai said that the traders would be provided fresh official price lists and warned that if they did not stop overcharging, strict action would be taken against them.
