LANDI KOTAL, March 9: The elder son of former MNA Maulana Khalilur Rehman from Bara was shot dead by activists of Shalobar peace committee on Saturday, sources said.

Family sources said that Asmatullah, 28, had gone to Qambarabad in Shalobar to shift his belongings from the house, which was long vacated and now occupied by the peace committee activists.

It was learnt that exchange of hot words took place between Asmatullah and the activists after which he was stopped from taking his belongings from the house. He was killed on the spot when a ‘peace activist’ opened fire at him.

His father Maulana Khalil, who was elected MNA in 2002 general election, and his family had long shifted to Peshawar due to insecurity in Bara.

Meanwhile, officials in Jamrud said that a suspect arrested for his alleged involvement in bombing of a polio centre committed suicide during custody on Saturday.

Talking to Dawn, assistant political agent Jahangir Azam Wazir claimed that the accused had confessed to his crime during interrogation and later he committed suicide.

He said that that the suspect, Mohammad Khan, an employee of Jamrud civil hospital, was arrested on March 5 following a bomb blast.

Staff members at the civil hospital said that Mohammad Khan was a van driver and would transport lady health workers during polio vaccination campaigns. — Correspondent
