KARACHI, Oct 7: The election commission will start receiving nomination papers on Monday (today) for by-elections on one National Assembly and one Sindh Assembly seat (NA-245 and PS-21) in Karachi and Naushahro Feroze, respectively, which fell vacant following the disqualification of Farhat Mehmood Khan and Dr Ahmed Ali Shah for holding dual nationality.

Nomination papers would be accepted till Tuesday. The by-elections on the two seats in Sindh would be held on Nov 17 as per the announcement of Chief Election Commissioner retired Justice Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim.

A three-member bench of the apex court comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, Justice Jawad S. Khawaja and Justice Khilji Arif Hussain had disqualified the two lawmakers belonging to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and the Pakistan People’s Party under Article 63(1c) of the Constitution for possessing dual citizenship.

For the National Assembly seat, the regional election commissioner, Karachi, Tanveer Zaki, would act as the district returning officer, the district central election commissioner, Nadeem Haider, would be the returning officer and assistant commissioner of Nazimabad and mukhtiarkar of New Karachi would act as assistant returning officers.

For the PS-21 seat, the regional election commissioner, Sukkur, Amir Bux Abbasi, would be the district returning officer, while the district election commissioner, Shaheed Benazirabad, Sain Bux Chunnar, would be the returning officer, district education officer, Mehrabpur and Mukhtiarkar of Kandyaro would act as assistant returning officers for the by-election.
