Photographer Edgard Garrido photographed bullfighters and bullfighting in Mexico City as the capital contemplates a ban on one of Mexico's most popular sports, employing many thousands of people. Following a similar move in Catalonia in Spain and recent restrictions on the controversial practice in several Latin American countries, including Ecuador and Peru, Mexican activists are fighting to see their capital follow suit. – Photos and text by Reuters

A legislative initiative to ban bullfighting in the country's capital has stalled since April due to a lack of consensus among the seven political parties. Launched last year by the Ecologist Green Party of Mexico (PVEM) and supported by the country's animal rights groups, the initiative is a direct result of Catalonia's ban of the sport in 2010.
