KARACHI: About half a dozen persons, including four students, were injured when police dispersed a crowd of students yesterday afternoon. The students, who went on strike yesterday for an indefinite period, stopped buses and cars at some places. The Police first dispersed school boys near New Bohri Bazar earlier in the day, while they were interfering with traffic.

Later in the evening, Police again had to disperse students on Burns Road, where they were stopping buses and other vehicles. Five persons were injured, including four students.

A meeting of the students, held in Khaliqdina Hall last evening, condemned the “lathi-charge” by the Karachi Police on them yesterday. Yesterday was the first day of the strike called by the Inter-Collegiate Body to press their demands.

At a largely-attended meeting of NED College students yesterday morning, speakers deplored the attitude of the Government towards the students’ problems. They said they would not go to their classes unless their demands were accepted and the 12 students externed from Karachi allowed to return to the City.

Besides Karachi University, the following colleges were affected by the strike; D.J. Science College, S.M. College, NED College, Islamia College, Government College for Women, Sir Syed Girls College, Razi Ali College and Nabi Bagh College. —Staff Correspondent
