No undoing of One Unit

GUJRANWALA: Maulana Abul Ala Maudoodi, Amir Jamaat-i-Islami, said here that his party was not in favour of disintegration of One Unit, and considers it most useful for the progress and solidarity of the country.

He was addressing a Press conference at the residence of Chaudhri Mohammad Aslam, Amir, Jamaat-i-Islami, Gujranwala, yesterday. He told newsmen that the Jamaat only wanted some basic changes in the Constitution, but was not in favour of scrapping it.

The Maulana condemned the underground activities of the Communists in the country and suggested that the Government should remove all restrictions from the Communist party as their underground activities were more harmful to the country than if they worked openly in the political field. — Agencies

‘Good future’ for space research KARACHI: Sir Harry Massey, chief of the Space Programme in the UK, on Monday forecast “considerable promise” for the future of the space research programme in Pakistan.

Sir Harry lauded the efforts of the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Committee (SUPARCO) in its space research programme. The launching of the country’s first two sounding rockets in June last, he said, “was very successful and satisfactory”.

Sir Harry, who is in Karachi on a brief visit, said that during his meeting with SUPARCO members, arrangements were made for the training of Pakistani space scientists at University College, London.— Agencies

Lepers’ donation KARACHI: About 150 lepers who are mostly beggars and live in huts near McLeod Road, have donated Rs.82.62 to the East Pakistan Relief Fund. The lepers saved this amount by foregoing one meal last week.

The donation was made to the Commissioner of Karachi, Mr Afzal Agha, yesterday by Dr G.A. Aleem, Secretary of the Pakistan Leprosy Relief Association, Karachi. — Staff Correspondent
