“Quaid-i-Azam envisaged a democratic Islamic welfare state where everyone enjoys equality by living in freedom and prosperity. Despite the passage of 65 years, the ideals of the founder of the country have not been achieved.

Dictatorial regimes have destroyed the country’s democratic institutions and ruined the fabric of society. Crippled economic conditions have worsened poverty, unemployment and lack of health and education. And it is unfortunate to see that a country with atomic capability is holding a begging bowl.

We cannot face our challenges without adopting the visions of Iqbal and Quaid-i-Azam. Supremacy of the constitution, democratic government, social justice, tolerance and patience in society, an independent foreign policy, and motivation to serve the people are the fundamental principles of these visions.

Unfortunately, the current regime has failed to achieve aspirations in every sphere of life. One after another, national institutions and sectors are collapsing. The politics of cronyism and corruption has played havoc with the country.

Let’s hope and struggle that this Aug 14 shall lay the foundation for a better Pakistan. I want to remind you of Jinnah’s message of unity, faith and discipline. Shun all differences; be united and stand united; no force can stop our marching feet because truth is always victorious.”

- Nawaz Sharif, president, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz
