LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to honour the team which won the Asia Cup but not the Test side which whitewashed England in the three-Test series in the UAE.

Sources told Dawn that the PCB has decided to hold a function in honour of the Asia Cup-winning squad in Lahore on May 25 before the national team’s departure to Sri Lanka.

Pakistan was ranked fifth while England was the top Test side but the former stunned everyone by whitewashing the latter for the first time.

The PCB chairman had announced that the team would be honoured but then England took revenge and whitewashed Pakistan in the ODI series and later thrashed them 1-2 in the Twenty20 series.

There are some reports that Pakistan Test side’s performance has been ignored as the then coach of the team, Mohsin Khan, had developed some differences with the PCB chairman.

The England series also proved to be Mohsin’s last as Dav Whatmore took over and Pakistan won the Asia Cup, beating Bangladesh in a close final on March 22.

But despite those excellent achievements of the national team, the PCB is going to recognise only the performance of the Asia Cup-winning squad and that too after two months of the final.

The sources further said the PCB may not announce any special cash prize for the winning team.—Sports Reporter
